About Wiehan
Wiehan de Jager is a South African artist, printmaker, visual-communication designer, illustrator, and lecturer based in a quaint little town called Riebeek Kasteel in the Western Cape.
Through his work, Wiehan explores the processes of mark-making with the juxtaposition of various media such as collage, printmaking, drawing, painting and digital illustration techniques. The surface and material are mostly that of paper, its versatility being tested, and the possibilities explored when working with a combination of various types of paper, mediums and techniques. The results are sensitive and detailed, balanced out with bold organic moments.
Wiehan works intuitively and exploratively, not being too precious about the plan, but to let the work set the tone, coming into its own. He draws inspiration from arid and tactile natural Southern African landscapes, such as the Kgalagadi, the Richtersveld and the Cederberg. He finds these places to be inimitable, spiritual, and complex in their unpretentiousness. Various themes are explored, mainly reflecting on interpretations of movement, stillness and change. The interpretations become textural, layered, structured, emotive, and abstract, as if slowed down or paused in its volitant moment.
Wiehan holds an Honours Degree in Visual Communication and has participated in various group exhibitions in South Africa and abroad. His work has been included in various collections, such as Haus Des Papiers Museum in Berlin, Spier Arts Trust, Majeka House in Stellenbosch and the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town.
He held his first solo exhibition in early 2023.
